In partnership with the Salt Lake City Library, we are providing free access to experience hands on craft making, food demonstrations, and/or dance and performance instruction through a variety of virtual workshops tailored around our Living Traditions community.

Piñata History and Craft Workshop – June 2

Join Artes de Mexico en Utah for a Virtual Workshop on the history of the piñata with a craft lesson on creating homemade piñatas.

All supplies needed for attendees to participate in this craft workshop will be provided ahead of time.

The Piñata, one of the symbols that identifies Mexico in the world, is more than a fun craft. From China to Italy, to Mexico, learn how this traditional object is part of a vibrant cultural fusion. Let’s make a piñata together while learning about this rich part of the history of Mexico. We will feature artists piñata maker: Clara Amezcua, and Fanny Guadalupe Blauer, executive director of Artes de Mexico en Utah, as facilitators.

This is a virtual workshop presented by the Salt Lake City Library. For this workshop, you will need to pick up materials from the Art Barn (54 Finch Ln, Salt Lake City, UT) on June 1st.

Samoan Sapasui Food Demo Workshop- June 9

Join Tausala Productions’ Fina Schwenke with a virtual food demo of Samoan Sapasui.

Fina Tavita Schwenke is of Samoan and Tuvalu descent and was born and raised in SFO Bay Area. She learned how to cook Samoan Sapasui from her mother Amilagi Pulu Tavita of the Mauia/Ugaitafa clan of Aoa, American Samoa, and perfected by her father-in-law Arthur Oliver Schwenke of the AhChing/Schwenie clan of Upolu, Samoa.

Please note that if you wish to cook along with the demo, supplies will not be provided ahead of time. However, you will receive an ingredient list in your confirmation email so that you can cook with Fina!

Lei Making Workshop – June 16

Kahealani Ohumukini Blackmon perpetuates her Native Hawaiian culture by teaching traditional ways of various crafts and hula. She learned to create various styles of Hawaiian leis from her father, Keola Ohumukini. Her first Lei made was at age 6. Join her for this virtual workshop on the art and history of the Lei.

All supplies needed to participate and follow along with this workshop will be provided ahead of time.

Kalari Movement Workshop – June 23

Join Kalari Movement with a virtual workshop on the Indian martial art of Kalaripayattu.

Nicole & Andrew Hicks have been studying and teaching Kalarippayat; the ancient healing and martial art from south India since 2009. Nicole will be teaching some of the foundational movements of the practice! Think of Kalari as a blend of yoga, martial arts, and dance, it actually predates yoga and some claim it as the first martial art.

Be sure to wear comfy clothes and find a space where you can easily move, and don’t forget to bring some water.

Flamenco Tangos Workshop

Join Flamenco del Lago’s Katie Sheen-Abbott for a free virtual Flamenco workshop from the comfort of your home. Come prepared to dance, wear some comfortable shoes, and, if you’re up for it, throw on a flamenco skirt to really get in the mood for this Spanish dance class.

Don’t want to dance? You can also participate by learning the Tangos rhythm through palmas (clapping).

Katie Sheen-Abbot studied Flamenco in Sevilla, Spain and she’s been teaching Flamenco professionally for six years. She’s excited to be teaching a Flamenco Tangos Workshop for Living Traditions this year!

Mama Africa Food Demo

Join us for a virtual workshop with Mama Africa on how to make her famous beignets!

Please note that if you would like to cook along with the demo, supplies will not be provided ahead of time, however, an ingredients list will be included in the confirmation email.

Mama African is a Culinary Entrepreneur and Chef and Designer. She inherited her beignets skills from her Gramma Justine Ngalu wa Mahole Mua Mpunga Muena Nshimba. Her dad’s mom, she loved to cook Beignets for the whole neighborhood in Muene-Ditu in the Kasaï Region of the Congo DRC.
