Laurel Cannon Alder is the Deputy Director for the Salt Lake City Arts Council. Prior to this role, she was the grants manager for the Utah Division of Arts & Museums, and oversaw a $7.5 million budget that was distributed to grantees throughout Utah. During her thirty year career, Ms. Cannon Alder has been a forward-thinking, strategic and steady leader in Utah’s arts and nonprofit communities where her focus has been to build partnerships and empower leaders to achieve their goals in the various communities and organizations throughout the state. She has also engaged in her own nonprofit pursuits and client efforts, including serving on and chairing nonprofit boards, starting organizations, creating grassroots fundraising campaigns, building boards, developing facilities, running major events, writing grants, marketing various events and programs, and developing corporate sponsorship relationships. She was the founding Chair of Utah’s Philanthropy Day in 1999. She received her B.A. in liberal arts & sciences from Utah State University in Logan, and M.A. in art administration from Indiana University where she was also awarded the prestigious Jane Addams Fellowship from the IU Center on Philanthropy. As a graduate student she also worked for the highly ranked Indiana University Foundation. As a volunteer, she currently serves as the fundraising chair for the Foundation Board at Utah State University and as a board member of the Paul T. Walton Charitable Foundation.
