Exciting changes are coming to Out of the Blue—affectionately known as “The Whale.” Stephen Kesler’s iconic sculpture, located at the roundabout in the heart of Salt Lake City’s 9th and 9th neighborhood, will receive a new mural next summer! The current mural, Point of Reference by Mike Murdock, has transformed the sculpture into a strong symbol of community, creativity, resilience, and harmony.
Out of the Blue is a public artwork by Salt Lakers, for Salt Lakers. To reflect the neighborhood’s vibrant and ever-changing spirit, a new mural will be commissioned every 3–5 years. This rotating mural program brings new styles, perspectives, and stories to the sculpture, – ensuring it remains a meaningful part of the dynamic community. Like our growing city, Out of the Blue will continue to evolve, while the sculpture itself remains a steady symbol of the 9th and 9th neighborhood.
The Salt Lake City Arts Council is inviting community input as we begin the search for the next muralist. What does “The Whale” mean to you? What makes 9th and 9th unique? What is Out of the Blue about Salt Lake City? Your insights will help shape the artist selection process and inspire the next mural. To take the survey, visit slc.gov/whalemural/. As we say goodbye to Murdock’s work we look forward to what art will adorn our beloved whale next.
