About the Mural
Trevor Dahl’s Watchers of the Shore transforms a busy Rose Park corridor into a vibrant tribute to the Great Salt Lake and its creatures. Known for blending playfulness with deeper meaning, Dahl depicts brine shrimp, birds, and other lake life as spiritual guardians, united and gazing toward the city. The mural’s vivid details and reversed perspective place the lake and its ecosystem in the foreground, reminding viewers of the essential role even the smallest organisms play.
Created in collaboration with the Northwestern Band of the Shoshone Nation and the Great Salt Lake Institute, the piece honors the interconnectedness of people, wildlife, and environment. Positioned along 1000 North and the I-15 on-ramp, the mural not only celebrates the lake’s beauty but also calls attention to the urgent need for its protection — particularly for West Side communities most affected by its decline.
