The traditional performances of music and dance provide a rich array of rhythm, movement, instruments, and vocals that engage the audience.
Music and dance are often at the heart of cultural expressions found in every community, developed for celebratory, sacred and daily occasions. The performances also represent all ages, connecting the generations. These performing groups commit to preserving the traditional songs and dance of their respective communities and spend many hours in classes, rehearsal, and preparation.

Divya Narayanan, with over 25 years of expertise in the field, is an accomplished artist, choreographer, and teacher. She is a triple scholar recipient in the Indian Classical Dances – Bharathanatyam, Mohiniattom, Kathakali, and in many folk dances of India including Bollywood dance. She is also a national graded artist in India. Divya School of Dance has been in Utah for the past 13 years and has accomplished over 500 performances at prominent institutions. Indian classical dances, Indian folk dances, and Bollywood dance routines are currently taught in 2 locations: South Jordan and Salt Lake City. One of the most anticipated elements of the Festival are the food vendors which are organized by local businesses, non-profits, and community groups who use the proceeds earned at the festival to re-invest in their year-round cultural programming, such as classes, workshops, performances and festivals. For the volunteer cooks, as well as family and community members who assist, the Food Market provides the opportunity to gather and share their most delectable food traditions with everyone who attends the festival. The food market also serves as an incubator for small businesses.

These craft artists have acquired the skills and techniques that are passed down through generations or learned through apprenticeships and demonstrate traditional crafts, materials, and techniques. Artists often share the history of the art form, as well as how they became interested in it. The traditional materials and techniques are part of the story as well. Many of the Living Traditions craft demonstrators have been recognized with awards for excellence.

Since her childhood in Germany, Ingrid Hersman has carried on her family’s tradition of decorating eggs for holidays and to be given as special gifts. She has studied and acquired skills in a variety of the techniques and styles found throughout the European continent including the wax-resist method, commonly used for Ukrainian pysanky.

Ferrell Peterson is a lifelong woodcarver who loves carving whenever and wherever he can. He specializes in pieces depicting Western cowboy culture and enjoys the challenge of carving different facial expressions. He has won several awards for his expressive work and regularly teaches others at national and local events.

Many of the Burundian refugees who live in Salt Lake City were traditionally farmers and basket making has always been an important part of rural life. Baskets are used for household storage, ceremoniously delivered as wedding gifts, and even balanced atop the heads of dancers. Being able to make a beautiful basket is considered a necessary preparation for married life and important in attracting a husband.

The Pueblo Indians of the American Southwest are famous for their exquisite pottery. Katherine Poleviyaoma harvests clay from her Pueblo home, uses centuries-old techniques to build and decorate traditional pottery and also crafts green ware featuring traditional designs. Her husband and son share her passion for this art form and she has been working with her granddaughters to pass on the tradition. Darrell Poleviayoma is well-known culture bearer for the Hopi people residing in Utah and continues to share his knowledge of traditional Hopi music and dance.

Utah’s South Sudanese refugee population includes both families and young men orphaned during decades of civil war. Many of the orphans, known as the Lost Boys, make clay toys, especially cattle, as a way to remember the cattle culture that is their heritage. Others continue to craft colorful traditional beadwork such as belts, necklaces, rings and earrings. Under the leadership of artist and DiDinga tribe advocate Donato Raimondo, some of the money the community raises by selling their arts is being used to help build a traditional school in Donato’s home village of Loudo.

Nikolay Motro was born and raised in Belarus, a former Soviet Republic, where he learned to carve wood from a neighbor. Using a variety of techniques, he carves faces and figures in both two and three dimensions as well as elaborately carved spoons, picture frames and other household objects that were used in Belarus’ villages. His work is both precise and graceful.

In the 19th century, women made bobbin lace to generate income while today lace enthusiasts enjoy bobbin lacing for its artistry and technical challenges. Elizabeth Peterson, a member of the Beehive Lacers, a group devoted to continuing this ancient art form has passed along her skills to her daughter and other students, allowing them to share this intricate and challenging art.

The International Rescue Committee provides opportunities for refugees, asylees, victims of human trafficking, survivors of torture, and other immigrants to thrive in America. Each year, thousands of people, forced to flee violence and persecution, are welcomed by the people of the United States into the safety and freedom of America. These individuals have survived against incredible odds. The IRC works with government bodies, civil society actors, and local volunteers to help them translate their past experiences into assets that are valuable to their new communities. In Salt Lake City and other offices across the country, the IRC helps them to rebuild their lives. Since opening its doors in 1994, the IRC in Salt Lake City has resettled nearly 12,000 refugees and provided life-changing services to thousands more in the Beehive State.
