PERFORMING ARTISTS
The traditional performances of music and dance provide a rich array of rhythm, movement, instruments, and vocals that engage the audience.
Music and dance are often at the heart of cultural expressions found in every community, developed for celebratory, sacred and daily occasions. The performances also represent all ages, connecting the generations. These performing groups commit to preserving the traditional songs and dance of their respective communities and spend many hours in classes, rehearsal, and preparation.

The Utah Punjabi Arts Academy preserves, promotes and performs the Punjabi cultural arts. They teach the folk dances and drum rhythms from the Punjab state of North India.

Los Hermanos de los Andes is an Andean folk music ensemble. Their purpose is to preserve and share their rich and unique musical heritage, using authentic ethnic musical instruments dating back to the ancient Inca civilization. As a group, they believe culture plays an important role in our lives because they also believe its beautiful power can cause a great and positive impact in people’s lives. They strive to educate by sharing their heritage and bringing people of all races together.

On April 13, 2015 Ballet Folklorico Sabor Latino was founded by Jacqueline Barahona. Through the art of dance, Ballet Folklorico Sabor Latino aims to empower cultural celebration of South America, Central America, Caribbean Islands, and Mexico. Cultural dancing provides us with knowledge of different cultures around the world. Teaching our audience about cultural celebration is our vision.

The Harp Irish Dance Company is located in American Fork and Payson, and is the premier Irish Dance performing troupe in Utah. This energetic group teaches and performs dances from both the contemporary/Riverdance as well as the traditional Irish Dance genre.

The food market is a multicultural dining adventure, offering the traditional foods of various ethnic communities.

One of the most anticipated elements of the Festival are the food vendors which are organized by local businesses, non-profits, and community groups who use the proceeds earned at the festival to re-invest in their year-round cultural programming, such as classes, workshops, performances and festivals. For the volunteer cooks, as well as family and community members who assist, the Food Market provides the opportunity to gather and share their most delectable food traditions with everyone who attends the festival. The food market also serves as an incubator for small businesses.

These craft artists have acquired the skills and techniques that are passed down through generations or learned through apprenticeships and demonstrate traditional crafts, materials, and techniques. Artists often share the history of the art form, as well as how they became interested in it. The traditional materials and techniques are part of the story as well. Many of the Living Traditions craft demonstrators have been recognized with awards for excellence.

Curtis Sillito has traveled the globe, sharing his creations and educating the public about the heritage of the Polynesian peoples through traditional handmade weapons, tikis, bone and wood art. He brings a deeper understanding of the cultures, who for centuries have kept their traditions alive on the Polynesian islands.

When she was a young teenager, Chue Thao’s family spent years in a Thai refugee camp but persevered in practicing their Hmong traditions. Chue learned sewing, cross-stitch, and embroidery from her grandmother and mother, while her father made jewelry to sell so her family could survive. Chue’s contemporary spin on traditional Hmong embroidery keeps the story of her family and Hmong culture alive in Utah.

Shirley John specializes in beaded jewelry, appliqued shawls and Pow Wow gear. Shirley is of Navajo, Hopi and Ute heritage. She was born in Monument Valley, raised her daughters in New Mexico and today lives in Clearfield. Shirley’s daughters and grandkids enjoy Pow Wow dancing and often work together with her to bead and sew to create their own dance gear and to sell their art.

Marla Love, an artist of exceptional skill, specializes in Mexican Day of the Dead art, a passion she shares with her mother Rocio Mejia, a local expert in Día de los Muertos traditions. Hermanas Maya Lu’um is a cooperative of sisters who learned the art of weaving through their mother, one of the last indigenous weavers of Oxchuc, a Maya Tzeltal community in the state of Chiapas, Mexico.
This group of sisters has been dedicated to preserve and continue traditional Mayan weaving by making their own Huipiles and other traditional clothing and teaching about the techniques. They have been sharing their artistry here in Utah for years and are excited to join the Living Traditions community.

International Rescue Committee

The International Rescue Committee provides opportunities for refugees, asylees, victims of human trafficking, survivors of torture, and other immigrants to thrive in America. Each year, thousands of people, forced to flee violence and persecution, are welcomed by the people of the United States into the safety and freedom of America. These individuals have survived against incredible odds. The IRC works with government bodies, civil society actors, and local volunteers to help them translate their past experiences into assets that are valuable to their new communities. In Salt Lake City and other offices across the country, the IRC helps them to rebuild their lives. Since opening its doors in 1994, the IRC in Salt Lake City has resettled nearly 12,000 refugees and provided life-changing services to thousands more in the Beehive State.

GREENbike

GREENbike, Utah’s only nonprofit bike share, connects our community with employment centers, high-density residential units, transit stops, and popular entertainment destinations.
The bike-share program serves as a mechanism to improve community health, air quality, and increase the use of existing transit infrastructure.
GREENbike is a non-profit, public/private partnership between SelectHealth, Salt Lake City, UTA, and other private sponsors.
The local non-profit bike share system is dedicated to offering the community an affordable, convenient, and sustainable transportation option.
