RE-ENVISIONED PUBLIC ART OPPORTUNITY AT 9th SOUTH ROUNDABOUT

    Posted by: Kelsey Ellis

The Salt Lake City Arts Council is pleased to announce an opportunity for Utah artists or artist-led teams to submit qualifications for the re-envisioned 9th South Roundabout Call for Artists.

The 9-Line Corridor is a major transportation passageway that connects residential neighborhoods, commercial centers, and recreation sites across the Salt Lake Valley. The corridor has recently undergone several improvements, including the construction of a roundabout in the 9th South & 9th East area of the corridor, at the intersection of Harvey Milk Boulevard, 1100 East, and Gilmer Drive. This neighborhood is home to both new and iconic businesses, restaurants, schools, and a wide array of residents and passersby. The re-envisioned 9th South Roundabout Call for Artists strives to commission artwork in the new roundabout that responds to the dynamism and sense of transformation in the area.

Originally released in December 2019, this project has been retooled to consider blending permanent sculptural artwork with a rotating program of temporary murals. The resulting artwork has the option to be part permanent and part changeable, allowing for new artists to interpret and modify the sculpture’s surfaces over time. This particular Call for Artists is exclusively commissioning permanent sculptural elements for the roundabout; finalists will be encouraged but not required to include up to 150 square feet of mural surfaces in their design. If murals are included in the final design, they will be commissioned in a separate process.

Artists responding to the Request for Qualifications (RFQ), must demonstrate a proficiency in executing work on a similar scope and scale and a willingness to design artwork that can be modified over time or otherwise remain current in a transforming setting. The RFQ is open to all professional artists and artist-led teams residing in Utah. The total budget for the sculptural component of the project is $100,000 – $115,000.

Applicants are invited to attend a virtual information session on Thursday, October 8 at 12:00 p.m. For more information on this RFQ and to apply, please visit saltlakepublicart.org/for-artists/calls-for-artists/. Submissions will be accepted through the Submittable website (www.submittable.com) until 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday, October 27.
